A Case of Sideroblastic Anemia

Jung Bong-Soo
Abstract
Sideroblastic anemia is characterized, by a) hypochronlic anemia b) ringed sideroblasts in the bone marrow c) increase in the bone marrow in total body iron d) ineffective erythropoiesis.
A defect of heme biosynthesis, which results in intramitochondrial iron storage, is the pathophysiological basis of this anemia.
The authors experienced one case of this sideroblastic anemia in a 7 month-old, female infant. Her chief complaint was dyspnea and pallor for 3 days. Peripheral blood smear showed severe anemia and slight microcytosis and hypochromia. Bone marrow examination showed marked erythroid hyperpla: ia, reversed M:E ratio, and many ringed sideroblasts.
Brief review of related literature was presented.
